South Kohala Traffic Safety Committee
« Back to List of Organizations
The Committee meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Waimea Civic Center (makai of the police station) at 4:00 PM for about an hour. This is one of 4 committees active on the Island (Puna, Kona, and Honokaa are the other districts active). It is an independent district citizen group that meets with County and State agencies and addresses traffic issues in the district. The District Safety Committees are affiliated with the Hawaii County Highway Traffic Council. Years ago there were 9 committees created by the County to gather input from citizens and provide a neutral place for citizens and officials to discuss issues. Traffic safety is a 3 part approach —engineering of roads; traffic enforcement; and public education.
Currently, most of the attendees are from Waimea or Parker Ranch. The membership is anyone attending the meeting. Everyone is given a chance to speak and present concerns and views related to traffic safety. The population of Waimea is 5,500 and Kohala District is about 13,000 plus. 2-4 People attend from Kawaihae and developments along Kawaihae Road, 3 from Waikoloa Village and 15-20 from Waimea and Parker Ranch. The State DOT (Highways and Harbors), County Police, County Public Works (Engineering and Traffic Safety) and 2 County Council Representatives use input from the committee to decide road project funding, traffic law enforcement efforts and other issues. It is therefore vital that more people and groups in South Kohala attend and participate in planning the future, maintaining a safe present, and avoiding the mistakes of the past.
