NEW SPECIAL OLYMPICS PROGRAM FOR NORTH HAWAII

Historically, North side athletes and their families have had to drive to either Kona or Hilo to participate in Special Olympics, but that will change soon with the start-up of a new delegation which will serve the Waimea Area including the Honokaa, Kohala and Waikoloa communities.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The benefits to athletes who join the program go far beyond physical fitness to include greater self-confidence, acquisition of a broad range of new skills and perhaps most importantly, lasting friendships.

There are no fees assessed to athletes or their families when they join Special Olympics. The program pays for equipment, uniforms and travel costs.

The new program will hold opportunities for everyone: family members, friends, schools and businesses. We are interested in hearing from individuals who would like to become certified coaches, unified partners, or fill a variety of volunteer roles. We will be looking into community resources for training facilities such as basketball courts, soccer fields and a running track. We are excited that North island athletes will be able to train on their “home turf” and we thank you for your support!
