Waikoloa Stables is starting two 6-week pilot programs for horsemanship and riding lessons for keiki or adults. The focus of each lesson is to teach the student a skill set that they can take to any horse facility and be recognized as a knowledgeable horse person at any level. To best set up each student with success, they will learn safety around and on horses, how horses communicate and how to become friends with them.
The lessons will be 1 hour long and one day per week for 6 weeks. These pilot programs are designed to gather information on what types of programs to offer in the future as well as the interest in the community. The first series is planned to start at the beginning of August (Monday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday). The second series is planned to start in September (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday) of 2023.
The pilot programs will be taught by Michelle Wellman, a professional in the equine industry for over 20 years. She graduated from the acclaimed Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre, at the top of her class. After graduation, she became the head of the Jumping department at Meredith Manor and taught there for 7 years. She then went on to work in New Zealand with racehorses, India starting a riding club from scratch and NYC working with all levels of riders. Her last location was in Amagansett, New York as the Facility manager at a hunter/jumper show barn with more than 50 horses. During her time there, she oversaw the entire program from maintenance to horse shows and all day-to-day activities including the large summer camp program. She taught riders, took them to competitions, and competed in the Hampton Classic in 2021.
